About the Department
The Department was established in the year 1999 – 2000 with an intake of 30 students. The goal of the department will be achieved through the involvement of faculty and students. The department has an excellent combination of well qualified, knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic faculty members. The department has a dedicated team of 25 Teaching Staff members,8 Non –Teaching staff members and 360 student members. The department has three doctorate holders, eleven staff members pursuing their Doctorial degree and two staff members pursuing their master Degree.

Late in the year 2001, the intake was revised to 60. In the year 2002, the intake was further revised to 90. In the year 2006, this intake was increased to 120.In the year 2007, B.E Mechanical engineering course was accredited for 3 years by NBA.

The department offers one U.G programme in B.E Mechanical Engineering and One P.G. program in M.E (I.C.Engineering). In the past five years, the department has organized one International Conference, every year one National Conference and Three sponsored My-Idea programs, twenty Seminars / Workshops on various Extra & Co-curricular activities.

The Department has signed MoU with various industries and R & D establishments. The department conducts training programmes for their students in association with various organizations. The department has membership with Professional bodies like ISTE, SAE-INDIA, ISHRAE, etc., for staff and students.

The department is recognized as a research centre by Anna University, Chennai and this will give the opportunity to the faculty members for having collaborative research with Anna University, Chennai.

The Research and Development lab has been recently established in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the laboratory exercises are designed with a dual purpose:

To provide the student with "hands-on" experience in the broad fields of Alternate Fuel, Refrigeration, Metallurgy, Metal Forming, Material Testing, Composite Materials and CFD Analysis.
To provide an atmosphere where the student will be required to communicate, both in written and oral form, the experimental problem and results in a formal, peer-reviewed form.
The Research and Development Center includes the following experimental setups.

Pyrolyser system is consisted with different devices to produce the improved products like liquid, gas and solids from the waste agricultural residues and saw dust. Our Mechanical Engineering students have done their project on production of Biodiesel from Sea buckthorn oil and the paper has been published in leading journal.

Experiment is made on retrofitting of Fc-12 House Hold Refrigerator in to Eco-Friendly Low ODP and Low GWP user friendly Refrigerant Blend. It has been applied for patent right.

In the Microstructure analyzer various experiments are conducted on Measurements and Metallography with advanced software called Metallurgy Plus. This software consists of two main tools. 1. Measurement tool 2. Metallography tool. Consultancy work on' Failure Analysis of water pump shaft' for M/s.Pyungdo Automotive Private Ltd.Chennai.

In the Hydraulic press and rolling mill setups, analysis on Metal deformation, spring back and other parameters can be done. Surface roughness of different machined components is measured and compared by using Surface Roughness tester. Different elements of screw threads and Gears are measured and compared by using Profile projector. Tensile, Compression, Flexure, Shear, Bending and other load tests are conducted on Universal Testing Machine. Experiments on Heat treatment of metals are conducted by using Muffle Furnace and Hardness of metals quenched with different mediums is measured and compared.

Our final year Mechanical students conducted experimental study on Manufacture and Analysis of Rubber Nanoclay Mwcnt Composite. Softwares such as Lab View, CFD STARCD are utilized on Design and simulation of Hydraulic circuits, pneumatics and Electrical circuits. Particularly, the project on Fluid Dynamic Simulation in a Diesel Engine using CFD software has been carried out by the final year Mechanical Engineering students. In addition to that, ANSYS software is used hear for doing Structural, Thermal and Fluid Dynamics analysis And also, by using Pro/Engineer software, our final year Mechanical students have done their project on Design of Moving Coil assembly for M/s.Iyyappan Industries, Chennai.

The overall objective of Research and Development activities in our research centre is applied research for the development and introduction of services and new commercial activities, from the initial idea and research works up to the delivery of innovative pilots.

The proposed activities of the R&D lab are
1. Sponsored projects for BE – To be obtained from industry.
2. Sponsored research and development projects to be taken by a group of faculty.
3. Consultation offered by faculty members on problems faced by industry.
4. Equipment Testing jobs for Industry.
5. Refresher courses for industry.
6. Lectures of experts from industry and funding agencies.
7. Recommending & Forwarding to some research-funding agencies, project proposals submitted by faculty for approval and financial aid.
The rich experience achieved through these activities will lead to practice oriented confident teaching. This will enhance the quality of education offered by this institution.
